Review Time
It’s a good idea to periodically stop and assess your situation to see if you are still on course and on time, don’t you agree? That’s what we are going to do this week.
During the course, at the end of each session, we stop and review what we covered. Because these blogs mimic the course, we can also do that here. At the beginning of each session, we go over what we will learn during that session. We then cover the relevant material and then review it. This learning method is called the rule of three and is a proven technique to aid learning, no matter what you study.
If you think about it, this concept is more important today than ever before. As we go about our day, we are literally bombarded with “information.” Almost all that “information” is useless and a distraction from accomplishing our work or other important activities we should be concentrating on.
OK, what did we review during the last six blogs? We covered 14 major points, and I’ll go over each one:
1. You must take several preliminary steps as you prepare to set and develop your goals to achieve your dreams and live your best life. Be sure you have them written down; you have studied and understand them. More details are provided in the previous post, so you may want to review it. Here they are:
You must have a desire to change or to achieve more.
You must believe you, personally, can change or achieve what you want.
You must decide what you want.
You must develop a plan with realistic, tangible goals (not objectives) and timelines to achieve your desired goals. Your current reality must temper your goals.
Must act. Accept that there is a risk when you change.
You must stick with your plan when things are going well and when they are not. Most achievement comes in times of difficulty. Success often comes to those who stay the course and don’t give up too early.
2. Each person has a unique personality type. This information is a bonus for those of you reading the posts that are not in the course. What are these four personality types? Which one are you?
Type A is called the Director. They are goal-oriented, operate well under stress, and are risk-takers.
Type B is known as the Socializer. They are outgoing, enthusiastic, and relationship orientated.
Type C is the Thinker. They are logical and detail-oriented.
Type D is the Supporter. They are cautious but task-oriented and tend to have a stabilizing effect.
3. Some assessments can help you determine your personality type. Again, a bonus on the post that is not in the course. Some of these are:
DISC
Myers-Briggs
Enneagram
Hogan
Coreiq
ASVAB
4. Be sure you are not suffering from learned helplessness.
5. We discussed four skill types: Hard, soft, cognitive, and character. Character skills win the day.
6. You are the master of your soul, the captain of your fate. You, and you alone, are responsible for your success in life. Yes, many of us had difficulties in the past or are now going through troubles. It’s your responsibility to figure out how to overcome them. Don’t play the blame game.
7. Our challenge is not dreaming too big or reaching too high but setting our sights too low. Achievement requires us to stretch ourselves beyond what we can comfortably do. Remember, no pain, no gain.
8. There is a season for all things. PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) is a process that works when appropriately applied.
9. Understand the power of positive thinking and train your mind to think productively. Remember the 80/20 rule: 80% of accomplishment is in our own minds. Overcome yourself to achieve.
10. Determination, perseverance, and grit are keys to success. This is what you must do when the going gets hard. And it will get hard. As they say, this is what separates the boys from the men.
11. Take care of basic needs so you can focus on achievement. Remember Maslow’s law. Go back and review it if necessary.
12. Like deciding to go to the moon, you don’t need to know everything; just have a will to do it. This is not limited to goal setting but pretty much anything in life.
13. Be committed, not interested. If you are only interested, you will quit when it gets tough. If you are committed, you will stick with it until you succeed. Which are you?
14. If you watch your pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves. Spend your money only on things that help satisfy your long-term dreams.
Homework must be completed during the course to ensure the material is mastered. If you have not mastered any of these topics listed here, go back and review the previous posts to ensure you do. Early on, I discussed the importance of notes in aiding your learning. Please ensure you are using handwritten notes.
